With the houses in the College valley, each one has certain elements, be it pictures, ornaments or whatever, which become associated with that cottage in your mind. When you return you see them and think ” I am back”. At the Mill there is a substantial water heater from goodness knows how long ago. It sits outside in the garden and to us is a welcome back sign. To any previous visitor this will be instantly recognisable.

Border fence

One of the first things which intrigued us when we came to the valley was the idea of the Border fence. The idea of a true national border seemed romantic and unusual for the UK.

Well the valley is unique in being the only place where you can stand in England and look for miles south into Scotland.

Winter brings a quietening in the Valley. The few tourists are gone, the car park is empty and the first snows arrive to remind us what how hard living up here must have been.
